The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on February 5 that Waukesha-based health system ProHealth Care is considering contracting with ACL Laboratories to reduce the cost of its lab tests. ACL is owned by the large health systems Aurora Health Care and Advocate Health Care, and achieves a lower cost per test by leveraging economies of scale. The smaller ProHealth hopes to take advantage of these savings by partnering with ACL, which processes more than ten times as many tests each day as ProHealth.

ProHealth and Aurora announced last fall that they were joining a partnership to improve quality and lower costs. Performing lab tests at the same facility could be the first of many examples of collaboration between the two systems. ProHealth expects to decide whether it will integrate with ACL sometime in the middle of 2015.
